Colloquium: What is Bethe ansatz?

In 1931, H. Bethe described a method which allows to diagonalize a large family of matrices appearing in one-dimensional quantum many-body models. Surprisingly, a mathematical study of this method led to many remarkable results in various fields of mathematics. I will explain the main ideas of the Bethe ansatz and discuss some of the theorems proved with the help of the Bethe ansatz including the Shapiro-Shapiro conjecture in real algebraic geometry.Host Department: Rice University-Mathematics
