12:00 pm Wednesday, April 11, 2012 Geometry-Analysis Seminar: Dirichlet's Theorem, lattices and equidistributionby Dmitry Kleinbock (Brandeis) in 427- Dirichlet's Theorem in the title refers to the pigeonhole principle, as well as to its application to approximation of reals by rationals. I will discuss the work of Davenport and Schmidt (1969) on "improving Dirichlet's Theorem", explain how it is related to dynamics on the space of lattices, and then show how a generalization of Davenport-Schmidt results follows from an equidistribution theorem, first proved in a paper with Weiss, and then reproved in an effective form jointly with Margulis.
