1:00 pm Tuesday, September 13, 2011 TOPOLOGY SEMINAR: A new distance for bridge splittings of knotsby Alexander Zupan (U. Iowa) in HB 427- Since its introduction by John Hempel, the notion of the distance of a Heegaard splitting has been modified to be used in a variety of contexts. We will use the pants complex and related dual curve complex of a bridge surface for a knot K in a 3-manifold M to define a new version of distance, which we can utilize to define new knot invariants. We will discuss several easy calculations of these invariants and also talk about some interesting associations between the pants complex and hyperbolic geometry.
