4:00 pm Monday, September 21, 2009 Stulken Topology Seminar: The classification of differentiable manifolds and the s-cobordism theoremby Tim Cochran (Rice) in HB 427- I will spend 5 minutes outlining the strategy used to "classify" higher-dimensional manifolds, the most important step of which is the h-cobordism (and s-cobordism) theorem. The bulk of the lecture will spent sketching the ideas of the proof of these theorems, which starts with using Morse theory to construct a handlebody structure and proceeds by manipulating that structure.
