Matthew Hedden (MSU)

Consider the intersection of an algebraic curve in C^2 with the unit 3-dimensional sphere. If the intersection is transverse, then it is an embedded 1-manifold in the 3-sphere; i.e., a knot or link. This talk will address the question: which knots arise in this way? I will discuss the history of the question, the current state of knowledge, and some interesting questions and conjectures.
