MathNews Volume III, No.8
Tomorrow (Tuesday, March 4) afternoon, we will have
another meeting of the Math Careeres Lecture Series. This
week's speaker, Alex Woronow, has a fascinating life story
to tell, much of which involves the application of math and
statistics to flight planning, fluid flow, geology and geophysics.
Check out his mini-bio at the URL given below.
Title: Backdoor Statistician: Confessions of a Bayesian Geologist
Speaker : Dr. Alex Woronow (ExxonMobil)
Time : March 4th, 4pm
Location : Herman Brown 227
Dr. Alex Woronow received A.B. in astronomy (U.C. Berkeley)
and worked for NASA as an "engineer of fluid & flight mechanics".
Then he returned to school and got an M.S. (University of Houston)
in geology/rock mechanics, and a PhD in geology/planetary science
(Harvard University). He was an tenured professor in geology at
University of Houston before joining the "mathematical
and computational geosciences" group at Exxon Upstream
Research Co where he currently works as a statistician.
For more information (it has a link to a short biography of Dr. Woronow
which is quite interesting!), visit

As usual, the lecture will be followed by pizza and soda
(generously provided by Dean Kathy Matthews and the
Department of Mathematics).
Everyone is welcome.
