Application Procedure

Rice University is interested in students with a high level of mathematical ability who wish to become research mathematicians. The application fee is $70.

A complete application includes the application form, transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, the results of the Graduate Record Examination (general), taken within the last three years and three letters of recommendation from faculty who are familiar with the applicant. The GRE Mathematics Subject exam is strongly recommended.

Those students for whom English is a second language should also have submitted the scores of the Test of English as a Second Language (TOEFL). International applications must meet the minimum TOEFL or IELTS score requirements:

  • 600 on the paper-based (PBT) TOEFL
  • 90 on the internet-based (iBT) TOEFL
  • 250 on the computer-based (BT) TOEFL
  • 7 on the IELTS (if taken in lieu of TOEFL)

The Department of Mathematics application deadline for the Fall 2010 semester is February 1, 2010. Late applications may be considered until April 15, 2010. However, candidates who miss the deadline place themselves in a less competitive position.
