Given a differential operator on a bounded interval, it is possible to give a function theoretic interpretation of the associated eigenfunction expansions. This (and much more) is accomplished by de~Branges's theory of Hilbert spaces of entire functions. In this talk, I would like to discuss the inverse spectral theory of particular operators (Sch\"odinger, Dirac, diagonal canonical system) from this point of view.
